4 Simple Steps to Speed Up Google Chrome

Google Chrome has passed all other browsers in popularity and it's popularity continues to grow. Today I will show you how to speed up Google chrome. If you familiarize yourself with these 5 simple performance improving tips you can make your experience more enjoyable, because nothing is worse than a slow browser. Google Chrome is plenty fast out of the box, but as your computer ages, so does Google Chrome, and if not properly taken care of your experience on the internet can suffer.

Is Google Chrome

  1. 'Slow' or 'Laggy'?

  2. Freezing every so often?

  3. Not displaying data correctly?

  4. Slowing down other aspects of your computer?
If these sound like your problems, then this guide is for you! Read on to find out more.

1.) Clean Out Your Temporary Files

More often that not Google Chrome is slow because it's caching too much data. Caching data improves load times of pages at the cost of memory. If your computer is over 4 years old there's a good chance your cache size is slowing Google Chrome's load times down.

To Clean Temporary Files

  1. Click the wrench in the top right corner of Google Chrome window

  2. Click 'Tools'

  3. Click 'Clear Browsing Data'

  4. Change the time frame to 'the beginning of time'

  5. Make sure 'empty the cache' is checked

  6. Click the 'Clear Browsing Data' button

This could take a while depending on the size of your cache and how long it's been since the last cleaning. Once this is done, you should see improvement in Google Chrome load times. To improve your load times even more you'll need to clean out all of your temporary files. Tools like SmartPCFixer make this incredibly easy. Without it, you'll have to do it manually, which is an arduous task at best.

2.) Remove Unnecessary Extensions

Extensions are great for Google Chrome. They enhance productivity and add a lot of third party features that are extremely useful. However, the more extensions you have, the more memory you have to have to manage them. Another common reason I see Google Chrome in particular slowing down is the use of too many extensions.

To remove or disable extensions

  1. Click the wrench at the top right of the Google Chrome window

  2. Hover over 'Tools'

  3. Click 'Extensions'

  4. Uncheck 'Enable' on every extension you do not absolutely need
Once you do this you should see a marked improved in browser responsiveness.

3.) Clean out Spyware and Viruses

It should go without saying that spyware and viruses not only slow down Google Chrome, but also adversely affect your computer's security and ability to run smoothly. Two tools I recommend are:

  1. Spybot Search and Destroy

Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent tool for cleaning out Spyware. Among other tools (such as the tool described in #5) I use this tool on almost a monthly basis to scan my computer to make sure everything is clean and clear. Nothing is worse than finding out that your computer has been infected with spyware for some time without you knowing. Make sure that doesn't happen by running an advanced scan using Spybot Search and Destroy.

  1. ESET Nod32 Online Scanner

Nod32 is my virus scanner of choice. Unfortunately, it is kind of expensive. If you can't afford to get the whole shebang from ESET they offer a free online scanner available for download that will clean viruses, rootkits, and other badware off your PC. Everything that Spybot Search and Destroy misses is bound to be picked up by this fantastic tool.

4.) Optimize Your Registry and Other Files

Speeding up Google Chrome is hardly just a browser-only problem. More often than not the initial steps described above will gain you some improvement but if, for example, your registry hasn't been cleaned or your hard drive hasn't been defragmented in a while you will still experience annoying slowdowns. One tool I personally use is SmartPCFixer. SmartPCFixer is a great PC optimizer that has over 30+ tools to make sure every last aspect of your computer is working as efficiently as possible. Check out SmartPCFixer here!

In Conclusion...

Google Chrome is a fantastic browser. Unfortunately, it can't do all the management and house cleaning itself. So long as you do your due diligence and follow steps 1 through 4 every few months Google Chrome (and your computer) is guaranteed to be running in tip-top shape.
